What is a blow off valve?

In any turbocharged car, the turbo charger increases the pressure of the intake air in order to generate more horsepower. When you lift off the gas (e.g. when shifting gears) the throttle doors close preventing air from reaching the engine. The turbo continues to spin generating more pressure in the now closed environment. The high pressure air is forced back against the turbo causing wear to the turbo turbine and acting to slow it down. A blow-off valve is designed to open at exactly the right time to release this pressure to the atmosphere, allowing the turbo to remain spooled up and eliminate the shock loading on the turbo. The turbo on all SAAB models for instance, which are only used to generate relatively low turbo boost pressures are fitted with a basic blow off valve (compressor by-pass valve) for enhanced reliability and response. It is curious that given the high boost pressures in the Esprit that a blow off valve was not fitted as standard equipment.
