Adjustable Cam timing gear - Lotus Esprit (4 cylinder, Lotus 910 engine)
By adjusting the intake timing, the torque and power curve of the engine can be adjusted. For USA market cars, the Esprit intake is retarded by 6 degrees over European models to meet emissions requirements. This robs the car of valuable low end torque which is required to compensate for the lack of turbo boost below 3000 rpm.
This is modification is especially beneficial if you have already upgraded your turbo or fitted a freer flowing exhaust system, which can affect the response of the Esprit off the line.
Once installed the cam timing can be varied within an 8 degree range within minutes. This allows you to easily revert to the stock US setting for emissions testing requirements. Simply, loosen the 3 bolts on the cam gear and rotate the cam by a few degrees. Graduated degree markings on the gear allow you to adjust the timing precisely.
It's also recommended to replace the timing belt when the gear is installed and also check/adjust valve clearances if the car has more than 30k miles.
