Electric chargecooler pump - Lotus Esprit (4 cylinder, Lotus 910
engine)

Does your Esprit seem a little less fast than you remember it being before.
You just can't quite put your finger on it though. Chances are you've lost a few
or all the blades of your chargecooler impeller.
The stock charge cooler pump on the Esprit is mechanically driven from
and auxiliary shaft (previously used for the distributor). It is located behind
the oil filter and is difficult to access without a lift. It is unfortunate,
then , that it houses the one part on the Esprit that wears faster than the
driver's seat bolster; the pump impeller. It is recommended to check and replace
it every 12 months.
The chargecooler pump, being driven by the engine is by definition a variable
speed pump. Pumping capacity estimates for the stock pump are between 1-4 gpm
(gallons per minute) at idle and redline respectively.
The electric chargecooler pump runs at a constant 4 gpm to provide optimal
cooling of the fluid. Constant flow rates reduce fluid cavitation within the
pump which is caused by the constant change of speed of the impeller. Cavitation
can cause wear to the pump and also heats the coolant (which is definitely not
what you want in an intercooling application).
