6 speed gear kit - Lotus Esprit (1988-2003 )Often described as the Esprit's great weakness, the gearbox/transaxle is not designed to cope well with power much in excess of 300hp. The stock Esprit V8 engine is highly detuned to prevent wear and tear on this critical component. for this reason the Lotus race ECU for the V8 adds 75hp-100hp at the expense of your warranty. The most common failure in both V8 and 4 cylinder variants is in second gear, through sychronizer wear or 2nd gear failure.Michael's Motorsports is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of a 6 speed conversion kit to replace the internals of the existing gearbox. Comprised of enlarged bearings, new strengthened shafts and gear cluster, this kit replaces most of the internals of the existing gearbox while retaining the crown wheel and pinion. The new gear kit is a dog engagement H pattern which utilizes the existing gear shift/selector mechanism with the addition of a 6th gear, below 5th on the current pattern. Torque/Hp rating figures this unit are roughly double those of the standard unit and are in the 600hp range. This is more than adequate for any modified 4 cylinder Esprits generating more than 300hp and a requirement for any serious performance work to a V8 Esprit. This unit is being developed by our partners in the UK, GTO Engineering and Williams (part of the BMW/Williams F1 Group) for much of the required design work. This kit will require you to send you gearbox to us for installation. Please call us directly for more details and pricing . |
